Lameboy DS 0.12

Considering it’s been over a year since last version released, there’s not many changes in this version. However I just recently returned to the lameboy project and started with some small issues. It is possible that you won’t need to wait another year for the next release.

Lameboy DS 0.12

Change log:

  • fixed: better interrupt timing (should fix Mario Land 2 boss levels)
  • fixed: multipacket SGB messages (fixes Pokemon R/G/B in battle color overlays)
  • added: backlight of the menu screen is turned off when not used
  • added: fullscreen scaling (ignores aspect ratio)

@AsIs: The reason why the sound is all garbled, is because the Pikachu voices are some sort of wave samples, whilst the “normal” sounds all come from the internal wave generators (2x square wave, 1x saw wave, 1x noise if I remember correctly), which are easier emulated. If it lifts you up, most GBC emulators for PC can’t handle those either. As far as I know, only the latest VBA could get it right. Not sure about goomba color (for GBA) though.

Hell; I’ll donate £20 if a version comes out which implements the link cable through the DS wireless!

I just started using this great emulator. It says tap R button on the DS to open the menu but this does nothing for me.

Anyone else know why this may be.

Nice ! Just when boss battles on MarioLand 2 were garbled for me, i find the newest version fixed it.

Just an idea for the next release : automatic backup of saves when they are modified. I hate it when i forget to hit the X button to save.

Hello there 🙂 I must say I highly support this homebrew and it is indeed very successful and a wonderful complement for my DSi^^ I’m currently playing Zelda – Oracle of Ages and i’m in the 4th dungeon (Skull Dungeon) and somewhere around the near halfway point (the areas full of rail carts), suddenly the emulator shut down and even turned off the DSi.

I went back into the game and now the top menu UI is blacked out as well as the sprites and animations. Other menus work but it seems to be corrupt. I tried a few other ROMS and they all seem to do the same thing on the same save state. If possible, I hope the team can look into this. Or if it’s something I did wrong, I’d be happy to hear how I can fix this. This may be a corrupt ROM or something within the emulator isn’t taking the data for this part of the game.

All of the other games I have tried have been perfect and ran excellent 🙂

Hello again, I just wanted to say regarding my earlier comment…I guess it must have been something with the Flashcard. I might have accidently knocked it a bit while playing and the contacts came a bit loose? Anyway, things are up and running. Wow…Spam central 🙁

As others have said, I would definately like to see the PCM sounds such as those from Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Pinball working. Adding a GS/GG code system would be very useful too.
Also, I would like if it were possible to have a standard border for games that do not have a SGB border already, and if possible, for games that run both SGB and GBC modes (Like Pokémon Pinball), if the emulator could use the SGB border, but emulate the game in GBC mode.

On a less important note, I’d love to see a full GUI for the menu screen rather than the text only version we have now. Text is fine, but the DS is capable of so much more than just plain text.
I’m not sure if it’s possible, but could the Lameboy system have a way to find the name of the games in the .gbc files and display those in the file list rather than the actual file name? If that can be done, I’d love to see that and have Lameboy remove the current file browser and simply display all the compatible roms on the flash cart.

I’m currently working to learn DS homebrew, so maybe I can lend some assistance in setting these things up.

Hi, i was playing Pokemon Red and it was really cool – Nostalgia buzz
but.. 🙁
when pokemon evolve, some are meant to learn moves just after they evolve. on the lameboy, i couldnt level my evolved metapod because it only knew harden :'(

i know its cheeky of me, but could you fix this please?
thanks, your doing a great job 🙂

and i tried other pokemon red and blue roms btw, they all have the same problem.

this problem does not happen on gold, silver or crystal btw 🙂

@ Pokaa:
That’s a known issue from Pokemon Red and Blue, which they fixed in yellow and up… Probably because the metapod in question evolved at a to high a level to make Butterfree learn the appropriate moves. This is not a LameBoy issue, but I will explain nonetheless.

Off-Topic Example: We know Metapod evolves into Butterfree at Lv 10, but you can catch a wild one at that same Level (or even up to lv 13.) HOWEVER, If Metapod evolves into Butterfree at Lv 10, it will learn the moves associated with lv 10. If your Metapod is already lv 10, it will evolve at Lv 11, missing the moves it should learn as Butterfree at lv 10. Consult a good FAQ for finding out which pokémon learns what moves on every level. (Or better, Catch a Caterpie at Lv 3 and raise it yourself: Put it on top of your list, and switch it out at the start of a battle. It will get Exp, even though it didn’t actually fight. It should evolve into Metapod at lv 5, learning Harden, and to Butterfree at lv 10.)

“Catch a Caterpie at Lv 3 and raise it yourself: Put it on top of your list, and switch it out at the start of a battle. It will get Exp, even though it didn’t actually fight. It should evolve into Metapod at lv 5, learning Harden, and to Butterfree at lv 10”

that’s what i did 🙁
sorry i wasn’t very clear.

i mean Buterfree learns confusion while it is still in the Evolving screen, but on the lameboy it ignores moves learned while on the evolving screen.

i was just using Metapod as an example, im sure this bug happens with all pokemon that learn moves on the Evolving screen

is that a bit clearer? 🙂 thanks for replyin btw

Hello I am French and I use this small software but I have a problem I would like to know why when I play has ball Dragon Ball Z: the legendary warriors Gameboy colors I do not arrive has to play the mode multiplayer please answer me send I an e-mail wiro974@hotmail.com

Hey i just found this today, but i really liked it from the start.
In my opinion it would be more better if you were to put multiplayer mode.
And a thing about that multiplayer, do you think it would be possible to have it compatible with TGB Dual?
If so please add the compatibility
Thanks 🙂

@Arthur: I am using this on the Cyclo DS Flash cart since I don’t want to carry the original Pokemon Yellow cart around because it won’t fit in my pocket with the DS. Gusse I am doom to stay with this.

@Pokaa: In that case, it could be a bug… I’ll try and see if I can recreate the problem on my AceKard2i.

@AsIs: Well, doomed may be exaggerated… At least until the samples are implemented right

Does Lameboy support save files that already exist? (Can I copy both the .gbc game and its save file and use it?)

Thanks.

Great to see this updating, but I don’t seem to be able to save my game in Link’s Awakening DX, and I can’t save states in it either. Am I missing something?

Hello again, testing out some more ROMS and I notice on this current version (0.12 at the time of this post) that Home Alone doesn’t have any sounds or music. Home Alone 2 is missing certain musics and sounds. Sad, cuz those were games I used to play a lot on my actual GB. I agree with most people here that a sound update and an input for Game Genie/Shark codes would be useful.

Still loving this program though^^

is this only for gameboy color games? is it? then plz can you make a gamboy advance emulator for r4 to plz

Qix (GB) freezes on the title screen in this version (music plays, but buttons do nothing) where as it played with some gfx glitches before. Any fix for this?

Just wanted to thank you guys for fixing the glitch in Super Mario land II. I didn’t realise there was an update and was pretty bummed I couldn’t finish the first game I ever bought. Just googled and found the update. 🙂 Works a treat!

I was wondering, now the DSi doesn’t have a gba slot, will there ever be a gba emu for the DS? It could actually be profitable now. Possible update for the lameboy or alteration of the PC’s visualboy advance?

Just discovered Lameboy today, using it on an M3 DS Real. The fullscreen scaling is great, never seen Mario Land and Tetris look so good! Keep up the good work.

Whoa! This isn’t dead, alright!

I have an idea for another zoom mode: cropped. Basically it keeps the aspect ratio, but it cuts off the top and bottom while making the width fill completely.

While I myself can’t think of when I’d use this, having it available can’t hurt.

Hello ev.

Tomb Raiders (Maybe Multi-Lang)
Alone In The Dark (Also Multi-Lang)

Above 2 weren’t move. (in R4/DSTTi/AceKard2i etc.)
Loop Logos & only broken graphics shown.
such as every early types of GBC simulator.

It’s so hard to fix ?

@Pokaa: Sorry to say, it MIGHT be a compatibility problem with your Flashcard, as I can’t seem to reproduce the problem on my AceKard 2i :S It just learns confusion right after evolving (and poisonpowder, and stunspore too by the way). Have you tried running it through Goomba Color as a GBA ROM? (that is, if you have a slot-2 flashcard)

@Knoeki: True, no$gba supports WAV/PCM Samples properly nowadays. Turns out I had an antique build sitting om my PC, but I honestly didn’t know about KiGB though. Point was, a lot of emulators out there don’t support it, or play them heavily distorted (At least, that’s how I would describe it) so it must be a difficult to emulate.

@Juan: Where did you get the save from?

conker’s pocket tales doesn’t work and i would like to play it, could you fix it? i’m using an ak2i if that helps

Adam, All you need to do is: Put the lameboy.nds in the root (or any folder) of your Microsd and then the roms (.GBC) in the same root/Folder in which you put the lameboy.nds.
Then, just run the lameboy.nds like you would do with any other rom and select the .GBC game to emulate.

Learn to speak english idiot,
It was a pleasure to help you.
Bye.

fukinmegatonic awesome dude , big up really bless to ya, some ideas can be that if you put some other background color for the gb games you know those who gav a green background can have a blue or a purple , or a black background whit the lines in white could be rare but curious , well you know and idk maybe a skin for the gui but good luck really the gba its one of my favorite systems very apreacite this sorry for my bad english

I’d judt like to ask people if they’ve been having problems after using this, like not being able to turn on DS after use of Lameboy.

I turned on my DS and the screens (not even the backlights) came on. Is this something wrong on my part or is everyone else experiencing this?

hi wonderful emulator! but i can’t seem to get to work fish files and new addams family, both microids game have major graphic issues sadly.. could someone help with that please? thanks 🙂

First off, thank you for such a wonderful piece of coding! It’s so nice to not have to worry about killing my carts or (worse yet!) my *kids* killing/losing my carts! 😀

I did notice an issue with the RTC in Harvest Moon GBC, and didn’t see it mentioned in other comments: After giving them enough ‘shrooms, the sprites say they will upgrade certain tools if I come back in 12-24 (real time) hours, however, they never gave them back, even after 5 days. Without GameShark to hack them in, I had to restart and just avoid upgrading those tools. I use an AceKard 2.1, and that’s the only real issue I’ve noticed so far. Is this something you or someone else can duplicate and fix/explain how to get around, or do I just have rotten luck? LOL

Thanks again no matter what. It’s an awesome application!

I’m starting to wonder if either my cart (NinjaDS) or my SD card is corrupted, or if I have corrupted roms, or maybe lameboy just hates me: after a certain time playing, I lose all my progress. I always save in-game and then press X/select ‘Save’ or ‘Exit’, and then turn of the NDS. When I turn it back on and load the game again, everything’s cool, I continue my games where I left them, but after a certain amount of time (it’s always random) when I turn on the NDS and choose a game to keep playing, the in-game “Continue” option is gone. The .sav files are still there, but it’s like I’m playing the game for the first time. This is really frustrating. I still have to check the .sav files with another emulator in my computer to see if they are corrupted, but I’d still like to know why this keeps happening. Anyone has been having problems like this?
