Lameboy DS 0.12

Considering it’s been over a year since last version released, there’s not many changes in this version. However I just recently returned to the lameboy project and started with some small issues. It is possible that you won’t need to wait another year for the next release.

Lameboy DS 0.12

Change log:

  • fixed: better interrupt timing (should fix Mario Land 2 boss levels)
  • fixed: multipacket SGB messages (fixes Pokemon R/G/B in battle color overlays)
  • added: backlight of the menu screen is turned off when not used
  • added: fullscreen scaling (ignores aspect ratio)

Wow, so cool to see an update to this and especially the fix for Super Mario Land 2 (I’m anxious to try it out). A game I would love to see working (as silly as it may sound) is The Little Mermaid — currently it just flashes black and white constantly.

Yay, update!
Still, I would like to see 2 new simple features:
-You should be able to scale to fullscreen with Y
-Option to decide which slot (ram save/state 0-9) the X button should save to

Otherwise this emulator is perfect! You are great, thank you for this!

I started playing Super Robot Wars 2G again and remembered another graphics “glitch” thing. In battle screens, the text boxes will blink alot sometimes. It’s like the blinking from F-1 Racing.

I’ll try more games out as soon as I can, lately homework and family haven’t allowed me to.

Ah, I so tried out my GB/C library today. The most common problem in many games (that have any problems at all) is the same blinking glitch from F-1 and SRW2G.

In Dragon Quest Monsters, in SGB mode, it will sometimes blink when getting into and out of battle.

In Shiren no Fushigina Dungeon, you always have like a pixel or two high bar at the bottom and part of options will display down there, something that shouldn’t happen.

In Final Fantasy Legends 3, the same thing occurs as in Shiren, whenever a textbox appears, a bar the height of the textbox will instantly appear.

In Final Fantasy Adventure, you have the blinking thing again as well. The blinking thing happens in Daikatana in the save screen. In Kirby’s Pinball Land, the same blinking thing happens when moving from screen to screen.

In Crystalis, the titlescreen blinks a lot and does weird things. This is not new to this version of Lameboy.

One weird thing that happened to me while playing Pokemon Pinball (SGB mode), as I saved (alot at once) and pressed L immediately afterward, the DS suddenly shut down. I will try and see if I can repeat this again so I can have a better idea of how it happened.

Hi, i’ve been following your project =) I was wondering what was the deal with the SGB borders? why can’t it happen using full color? =(
Cheers =D

Good to see you at it again!

The fullscreen option is a nice addition for some games.

@pederz
So are there already more than just one save state available? How can I access them? I repeatedly overwrote my Puchi Carat save, erasing all high scores and album CGs. I already started making backups of the whole save file so I’d really like to see some way of preventing this from happening again.

Man, you’re the best, this is the best emu for DS.

I hope you will find the way to play multiplayer via WiFi, I really hope it.

I love the new changes, specially Pokemon ones… Congratulations and very very very good luck…

Hey, thank you!! Great job with this, I’m finally playing SML2 !!!!

However, I’m still getting the Saturn stage glitch on Megaman V: It’s happening when you try to enter it after you beat Jupiter’s stage. Is it just me? Is there any configuation to avoid this?

I haven’t tried other games, but just with Mario Land 2 I’m completely happy.

Best wishes from Mexico.

Thanks A Bundle! (Mainly For The Pokémon Fix) I Can’t Wait For The Next Update! It Still Doesn’t Recognize Them If They Have A .sgb File Extention Though.

Amazing update, Nukti.

Does this sort out the problems with Pokemon Puzzle League for the GBC?

With the old version, the colours were off and they flashed awkwardly.

I’m waiting to see what you do with the next one.

Nutki: I tried doing that thing again where the DS just shut off. I couldn’t recreate it. Maybe it was the way I was holding my DS- in that case it may have been a problem on my end, so sorry if I startled you.

I was wondering if it were possible to have a GBC + Super Gameboy combination option where Lameboy reads the border data but loads the game in GBC mode? Useful for games like Dragon Quest Monsters which has the option of playing it on the SGB but can also be run in full color on the GBC. I CAN, however, see this conflicting with GBC only games, though (which, for everyone else, will give you a message telling the game’s only for GBC and not playable on the SGB)… :/ It’s up to you.

To everyone: The bottom screen’s backlight does sometimes turn off, but if you press R it will turn on again, although you’ll have to press left on the d-pad to go back to the previous menu on the Lameboy menu screens.

Jonez: No. Read: Lameboy is a Gameboy and Gameboy color emulator for the DS. If you want to play GBA back-ups, your best bet is buying a GBA flashcart. Get a 3-in-1 EZFlash if you don’t plan on using an actual GBA for it.

Ikki: You can access the other savestates by going to the Save Slot option and pressing left or right on the d-pad. Selecting None means the game will save to the .sav file as it should. Any number from 0 to 9 (ten save state slots) means the game will save into a save state. You can save 11 separate ways probably more than enough, imo.

Sachka: Currently, Lameboy can only emulate SGB compatible games in SGB mode, which supported a very limited color palette (four colors for everything on screen unless it was a SGB full color game like Donkey Kong). I don’t know how feasible it is to have it display both borders and in GBC mode, but maybe nutki will look into it.

Wrecking_Crew: Ah, thanks. But what’s wrong with the backlight turning off? Wasn’t it advertised as a new feature that helps saving energy and thus increases battery life? Why do you need the bottom screen anyway while playing? As you said as soon as you go back to the menu, it switches on again. So I don’t see how this should be a problem for anyone, actually.

But an option to turn it off would make everybody happy, I guess.

@Wrecking_Crew: I am also having the same problem with my DS Shutting off randomly. But for some reason that’s all it is. Randomly. And it only happens when touching the touch screen. I still haven’t figured out why it does that, and it’s only happened about 3 times to me.

@everyone: Is anyone else having problems with Conker’s Pocket Tales only working in SGB/GB mode, and not GBC mode?

Could someone please make a version of lameboy with a palette editor? I can’t stand the horrible lime greens. The original gameboy was more of a yellow colour that green and at the moment it looks inaccurate (as is the problem with every emulator). This is the ideal colour scheme http://www.iphonestalk.com/images/igameboytheme.jpg and the one on the left of this screenshot http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/gameboycolorful.jpg is what most people assume is correct. Is it possible to change the palette settings of lameboy?

NUTKI, please allow to set default ROM path, or remember last used ROM path
Thank you!

@i386 Place all of your backups into a folder called “Lameboy” that will solve all your problems ^_^

Hey I’m using Lameboy version 0.12 and I’m having a problem. I have been playing Pokemon Yellow on my DS using Lameboy and I have been pressing X to do a RAM save after saving my game. Now I want to transfer the save to my computer to continue play it on Visual Boy Advance.

I transferred the Pokemon Yellow.gb file and the Pokemon Yellow.sav file over to the VBA folder, but when I boot up Pokemon Yellow in VBA it doesn’t detect the sav file, only displaying a NEW GAME option and not displaying the CONTINUE option.

When I try to force it to load the save file by using File>Load…> Pokemon Yellow.sav, I get the following error code: 1431655766

I have googled this as much as I can but I can only find results of people saying that they can do this, no-one shares my problem or has posted a solution, can anyone help me?

tl;dr version: My *.SAV file from lameboy won’t work with VBA, what am I doing wrong?

Augh Nevermind I’m an idiot. What happened is I’m using a special VBA file that came with VBAlink because I want to trade my pokemon from Yellow up to Crystal. I downloaded a normal version of VBA and the SAV file worked just fine.

Thank you for this wonderful DS emulator, the fact that the SAV files work with PC emulators as well is just gravy! 😀

A bug: It seems like the $ff26 register will in fact not kill the playing sounds. This is annoying for me and all other musicians using Little Sound Dj with Lameboy. And it should be an easy fix. 🙂

Thanks for the update, the emulator is great! The only problem I have had is the blinking issue between screens that was already mentioned. Also, I would l like to see these two options:
1. Ability to set A/B buttons to Y/B (makes certain games like Mario and Castlevania easier).
2. Option to turn SGB borders completely (I like them, but for some games I just like no border at all).

I have to say, I’m impressed with your revival of the project. It’s nice to see good things not left forgotten. I really like having the SGB borders, it’s just too bad the GBC colors don’t work with them and that the PKMN Yellow’s border doesn’t seem to work. It seems there’s still a few technical bugs, like ways in which you can get stuck without having a game loaded but the menu is inaccessible somehow. I think it’d be neat if we could change and save/load custom color palettes, since there’s only Grey and Green so far, but that’s too complicated to be important anytime soon. Here’s to hoping you keep up the good work.

I see that one game (Robopon Sun USA) is probably not supported since it uses that obscure Hudson-HuC3 chip. I tried it on Lameboy and it attempts to load but just puts me back to the main screen. Just so you know. Maybe you can code that in. There are documentation about it all over and most GB/C emulators have coded it in.

Thanks for the emulator.

Can someone please tell me if you can play the original Gameboy games in color like on the GBC?

Thanks in advance! ^^

Very good emulator, I love it !
But I have a problem : I don’t manage to make multiplayer with games lime pokemon…

Does the emulator use the wifi of the nintendo DS as a link ? Will we be able to play in multiplayer later ?

hylatio: You can turn SGB borders off completely already. Go to the Emulation screen and below GBC there’s SGB. Just press right or left on the Dpad for that option and it will toggle it on on or off.

gamecube6: Lameboy does not currently support multiplayer. Admittedly, it would be awesome, but I guess many of us have gotten used to playing GB/C games on the GBA with no multiplayer support. The addition of multiplayer may not be easy enough to code or may put a lot of lag on the DS so maybe that’s why Nutki hasn’t [been able to] put it in.

ZZ: You can only select Green and Gray palettes for GB only games.

Ikki: Yeck, I messed up on my post. Some people noticed that when getting to the menu, the backlight would sometimes turn off when it’s supposed to come on or stay on. 😛

OniLink2323: Hmm, so I’m not only one, although it hasn’t turned off on me ever since that one time. That bug may be difficult to track down. I’ll try touching the touchscreen later to see if I can get my DS to turn off like that too. As for the Conker’s thing. Wow. Silly me didn’t bother to try it out in SGB mode (although to be honest, I’d recommend against it). But yeah, in Color mode, it just hangs.

Wrecking Crew: I knew about that option already, but turning SGB off turns off not only the borders but also changes the palette back to standard black and white. What I would like is to play SGB games with their colors but without the borders (if this is already possible please tell me).

Hey, Nice release, Thought this project was dead last time i checked xD Glad you guys are still working on this emulator!

Ok so.. Basically i downloaded this emulator only to play harry potter 1 and 2 on my NDS emulator xP, It works great except for:
The flashing (Only in the Screen where characters talk)
And the sound (For example when you enter a building) is kinda messed up, Althrough the music plays just fine.

Hope you guys menage to get the flashing fixed =) Other than this, Excellent work =). Good luck

Alright, this needs automatic saving BADLY. Wasted tons of time in Pokemon and found out it didn’t save properly. I pressed X after saving in the game, I assume it wasn’t the correct option since saving from the Lameboy menu worked last time I checked.

Also, the background seems to be black on first boot until you reset the ROM. It’s visible when playing Pokemon Blue and Red with the frame surrounding the game window.

I changed the settings on Vertical Pan, and while it was saved, the window was still in the center after restarting until I changed the setting again.

DS-to-DS multiplayer, or with two ROMs at once on the same DS, would be really nice, but I’m being nitpicky there. It would be great not to be forced to use cheats in order to get the Red-exclusive Pokemon, for instance, same goes with GSC.

Scaling stopped working once during the game. It switched to 1.5x, but looked awfully ugly compared to the other times I tried it, and wouldn’t switch back to 1x with the button Y; I had to use the Lameboy menu to do that.

Closing the DS lid caused Pokemon to crash two or three times, so maybe an option to NOT put the DS in sleep mode when the lid is closed might be nice.

I’m pointing out all the problems I’ve found in the emulator, but of course I love Lameboy like everyone else and thank you for your hard work, despite the few stability issues it works perfectly well and at a great speed.

Ah, and one more thing, I’m surprised that Red and Blue have Yellow-style colors! How did you manage to do that?

I second the request of more GB palettes/color schemes for monochrome games.
Also, “transparent” border like Goomba’s would be a nice feature!

hylatio: Oh. My bad. I thought you wanted to play them WITH the borders. 😛

Raphael: I usually press X a bunch of times. In games like Pokemon, I make sure it’s saving because it lags a little while Lameboy is writing to the save, although you can turn the bottom screen backlight on while you play and see if your game is saving or not (a “saving” gauge shows at the bottom).

Also, for the scaling, make sure you didn’t accidentally either turn off the filtering or changed around the Y and X functions (you can change what they do). I don’t have my DS with me atm, so I can’t check how accurate my information is right now, mind.

Great emulator, thanks or this, now I can play my GB/GBC games on my DS 🙂

One bug I found.

In GBC game ‘Warlocked’ not all the sound works.

Oddly, the attacking/base is beige attacked all works.
But any of the vocal words when you select your ’minions’ and tell them to attack, or guard or something, I hear nothing.

Part of the ROM or what?

Please keep up the great work!

Great Emulator

I would love to see support for the GBC game Logical. Right now it doesn’t even play it at all. It just freezes with a scrambled up image of the start screen. Just as an added fact I have tested this game on all the other emulators for DS and non of them will play it either. It has always run fine emulated on my computer though.

Keep up the good work and I hope to see a fix for this soon.

Dude thanks a lot for this emulator, its a great emulator, high compatibility and the best of all.. ITS FREE, trust me if i could i would donate!.. and lets get to the point..

is there a way u can make a “lame boy advance”? just asking because..
i have the new DSi.. yeah.. i need the 2nd slot.. i know its hard start from 0 but tell me something
do you think its possible?
that should be all

thnx

Dunno:
Check again you can donate to Nutki: https://lameboy.nutki.com/?page_id=14

As for the DSi and a Lameboy Advance, I just don’t see it happening – even the DS required GBA chips to be backward compatible; and I think the DSi removed those chips in favor of the cameras and music.

Hey, I only want to ask how the saving with X function works? If I save, and then restart, i lost all my progresses! How does this funtion exactly work?

Reygok: When you press X, the save RAM is saved to your memory card. After you save the game, in the game, press X. Also, always press X before turning the DS off, and you should be fine.

Hi please implement wifi use for certain .gb and .gbc roms!! please!

It will make the experience of playing my old pokemon games…nostalgic…to the MAX!

haha

Very nice to see an update. I assume there’s still no rewind feature? That’s really the only “must have” feature that this emulator has been missing for me. Either way, can’t wait to try this out later tonight. Keep up the great work!

@Wrecking_Crew:

Any possible support for Robopon Sun Version?

The sound playback is messed up a bit on one game called “Pocket Music”.

Thanks a lot for the emulator.

Cheers

I’m not sure if this is known but if you push the left shoulder button (which does a speedwarp) the sound that returns is a higher octave than what it was before. Try the old Gameboy Color Demo. rofl. The Lower pitch is missing and replaced with a higher octave through about have of the play time. Then it reset somehow.

Hi it’s me again, I am experiencing problems with the sound emulation of Perfect Dark.gbc (as well as a very minor one in pokemon yellow)

But in perfect dark there are no voices to be heard and no gun shots etc.
The only sounds you can hear are menu selection and bg music…fix pleasee
